In his paintings, Aubrun has rid himself successively of form, matter, and color. But this ‘abstraction’ in no way means lack of ‘reality’. Nature, in his opinion, lies in the texture of the light, in vibrant nebulosity, in the opacity of shadows. Aubrun's drawings represent vast realms, horizons between sky and sea, shown in all their breadth but using only the strictest minimum; a little graphite or colored pencil, a few eraser marks. One might glimpse a thinly-traced horizon, the slope of a mountain, sometimes even the tiniest of silhouettes, the merest inkling of a fisherman's skiff. Without pomp and with no big gestures, Aubrun seizes once again that density of emptiness, that pure vibration of space that has time and again been the source of strength and truth in his painting.
